Apologetic for Problem of Evil leading to No Belief in Existence of God
Atheist: "I don't believe in God because there's so much suffering in the world."
Apologist: Well let's go with your thought, so God doesn't exist. Is there still suffering in the world?
Atheist: "Yes."
Apologist: "So who's responsible for suffering now?"
Atheist: "We are."
Apologist: "Now if we're responsible for the suffering, and there's no God, is it possible there is a God and he's really upset about the moral evil leading to such suffering? We weren't originally designed for sinning you know."
In fact, humans are the only earthly beings that can behave beneath their created purpose.
You will never see a beaver create a bridge, he will only create a dam. Silkworms will only create create silk, never cotton.
Humans are the only earthly species that can subvert their purpose.
Great point! Suffering would continue to exist no matter if God existed or not. Therefore, it makes no sense to determine that God doesn't exist based on human suffering.
ReplyDeleteHowever, human suffering does point to another reality. Humans suffer and for some reason we thing we shouldn't. Why would we complain about suffering rather than simply expect it as natural end of mindless biological process.
The fact that human suffering offends us might reveal that we believe we shouldn't suffer. That belief is tied to a important truth. Humanity was never intended to suffer in this way.
